Dr John Zhang

After obtaining his medical degree at the Zhejiang University School of Medicine in China in 1984, Dr. Zhang undertook postgraduate training in the United Kingdom. He studied male infertility at Birmingham University, earning a Master's Degree there in 1985. At Cambridge University, Dr. Zhang studied in vitro maturation and fertilization of mammalian oocytes, earning a Ph.D. in in-vitro Fertilization (IVF) in 1991. He was one of 80 overseas student recipients of the British Postgraduate Scholarship in 1989. From1991 to 1993 Dr. Zhang received post-doctoral training at Georgetown University of US. 

In 1997, after more than ten years of training and research in the biology of mammalian reproduction and human embryology, Dr. Zhang successfully completed residency in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the New York University School of Medicine. In 2001, Dr. Zhang was chosen to become the first Fellow in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility of New York University School of Medicine. 

In the period between 1993 and 1997, the collaborative research programme convened by Georgetown University and Peking University, which was headed by Dr. Zhang, was sponsored by Rockefeller Foundation. In 1997, Dr. Zhang won the awards of Best Research Article and Best Poster at the annual meeting of American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), which is the largest academic conference in reproductive science worldwide. Dr. Zhang’s research was also awarded with funds by ASRM/ Orgalutran corporation in 2002-2004. 


Dr. Zhang is highly skilled and experienced in the clinical practice and laboratory techniques in reproductive endocrinology. He’s also exceptionally accomplished in the operations and management of embryology laboratories. Dr. Zhang is renowned as an early pioneer of minimal stimulation IVF and natural cycle IVF, embryo and egg freezing, freezing by vitrification and cytoplasmic transfer, which has become a cutting-edge innovation in reproductive science these days. 


His research interests include long-term cryopreservation of oocytes, embryos and ovarian tissue, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, minimal-invasive surgeries for reconstruction of fallopian tubes, uterine transfer operations on rats, as well as oocyte reconstruction by nuclear transfer. His research and clinical work in mammalian in vitro fertilization is highly recognized. He has participated in the research towards cryopreservation of ovarian tissues and oocytes for cancer patients, which has been a ground-breaking progress that brings new hope to millions of cancer survivors and patients with haematological diseases.
